The Program

The mission of the Western Reserve Health Education’s (WRHE) General Surgery Residency Program is to foster the continuation of scientific and clinical experiences that support the educational, administrative, and professional needs of the surgical trainee while maintaining the commitment to excellence, innovation, and leadership in preparing young surgeons for a career in medicine.

Our program is designed to provide comprehensive training for those wishing to pursue a career in primary general surgery or for those who are applying for post-graduate specialized surgical fellowships.

We offer an in-depth and diverse surgical experience. Surgical residents are offered the opportunity to participate in all operative procedures including surgical subspecialties such as head and neck, burns, oncology, cardiothoracic and peripheral vascular, colorectal, surgical endoscopy, plastic and reconstructive, urology, pediatric and transplant.

Our fully-accredited teaching program provides core general surgery and subspecialty experience to third and fourth year Northeastern Ohio University College of Medicine (NEOUCOM) medical students.

The WRHE faculty is a well-trained, motivated academic group who are dedicated to surgical education. The Department of Surgery has a faculty of more than 75 surgeons and 27 gynecologists who participate in resident teaching. Our staff of almost 175 primary care physicians complements the subspecialties.

Over 15,000 surgical procedures are performed annually at WRHE. General surgery residents at WRHE are given the opportunity to perform a wide variety of surgical procedures under the supervision of active staff surgeons in the 14 surgical suites and 4 endoscopic procedure rooms located at Northside Medical Center.
